Why start-stop cars need an AGM battery
A start-stop system restarts the engine every time the car pulls away — hundreds of times a week rather than a handful. A conventional flooded battery is built to deliver one big burst then be recharged steadily, and that duty cycle destroys it.
What AGM changes
Absorbent glass mat construction holds the electrolyte in a fibreglass separator rather than as free liquid. That tolerates deep, repeated shallow cycling, resists vibration, and cannot spill. It also accepts charge faster, which matters when the alternator only has seconds between restarts.
The step people miss
- Code the battery to the vehicle. Most start-stop cars run a battery management system that tracks the age and state of the fitted battery. Fit a new one without registering it and the car keeps charging to the old profile.
- Do not downgrade. An AGM car can never take a flooded battery. A flooded car can take AGM, but rarely needs it.
If the start-stop function has quietly stopped working, the battery is the first thing to test — the car disables it to protect a battery it knows is tired.
